School Waste Management

Good afternoon all

I am working on a workshop for schools regarding waste management and I would love any ideas, links and information you might have.  Using earthworms is obvious.  What else do schools do?

I want to push the line that good waste management is not only educationally and environmentally valuable but can save the school money.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Chapter Liaison and Executive Update April..

Dear Members,
I hope you are well, and had a good easter break!

Please find below a summary of activities across our Chapter:

March Environmental Education Webinar a Success!!
We ended up with over 50 members joining together online to provide input to the AESA research project, to share our stories locally, develop professionally, and coordinate a call to action. With members meeting at hubs in Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Brisbane and Toowoomba, and individuals joining us from home and their workplaces, we managed to communicate across our vast state, sharing experiences and inputting into the research project whilst reducing our own carbon footprint!  Congratulations to participants and hub coordinators for this great event, which we hope to hold annually to facilitate communication and coordination across our Chapter.  Thank you to AESA, Graham Tupper and Lonergan Research for enabling our Chapter to feed into your research in this way, whilst meeting the needs of our members and our organisational needs of our chapter - a Win/Win/Win!!!
Members who have participated, but did not receive their PD certificate as yet, please email:

Building upon our combined efforts from the successful Qld AAEE hosted AESA Webinar,  please note the following things are in train:
  • Our existing Chapter Liaison Network of Sioux (Cairns), Jan (VET - Sunshine Coast) and Paul (Gold Coast) have grown to include Marjorie (Mackay) and Linda (Townsville).  You can contact your regional chapter group via email: networkaaeeqld@gmail.com  with your name and location in the subject line and cc in Nichole, our Liaison Officer to the National group: liaisonaaeeqld@gmail.com
  • Ron has drafted content for our next newsletter and is currently putting it into a template.  You can contribute to our Chapter newsletter any time via: commsaaeeqld@gmail.com
  • Ron has also begun looking at the history of environmental education for sustainability in Australia with the aim of creating a succinct document we can provide to pollies/funding bodies etc to demonstrate to them the rich history of what we are doing within Australia and hopefully debunk some incorrect perceptions.  This will be made available to all members through various means in the future.
  • Nichole is currently developing a draft proposal document around the future of our chapter - our draft strategy for the next few years and discussions about the structure we need to ensure we get there.  This draft document will be in line with the national mission, vision and values and will be a starting point for a multi-stage consultation including with you, our members hopefully by term 3.
  • Nichole and I are investigating the participation of our chapter within the  Joint Council of Teacher Associations Queensland, a potential way to increase our profile and coordination of our efforts.
  • Cam is participating in a meeting next week - the informal AuSSI.  As you know it is currently not funded, and amongst other things Cam will be learning how the AESA project is progressing and, interestingly, a Commonwealth Education Trust...he'll keep us posted with outcomes.
  • Hilary W is participating in the National Executive meeting next Monday, and will keep us informed of the work of the national team.
  • Nichole and I are investigating a AAEE Qld  trade display at the Beginning and Establishing Teachers' Associaiton (BETA) Spirit of Learning Conference on Sunday April 28, 2013.  Also part of an upcoming membership drive, more on that later...
As you can see there is a lot progressing around our state, thanks to the voluntary efforts of your fellow members.  We welcome those interested in developing a AAEE Qld Chapter network in their region, those with policy formulation skills, and we are still in need of a treasurer.  All AAEE Qld members are invited to share your skills with the Chapter...email me at: aaeeqld@gmail.com
Kind regards,
Jo Kelly
