Dr Daniel Pauly's Australian Tour - Global Overfishing and what it means for Australia

Dear friends,
I want to tell you about the exciting news of Dr. Daniel Pauly’s first-ever Australian tour. A world-authority on fisheries, Dr Pauly is also a charismatic speaker with a powerful message.
But first, Minister Burke finally confirmed that the two year super trawler ban will hold. There will be no super trawler fishing while impacts on our fisheries and marine life are researched. The same day, Seafish began asking if they could use a slightly smaller factory freezer trawler. We thought it was clear – no super trawlers in Australia, until you can prove they are sustainable.
It’s also clear to us that besides doing extra research on the stocks and quotas of small pelagic fish targeted by Seafish, we need to study the impacts of super trawlers globally and we need to decide whether they have a place in the future of Australian fisheries at all.
Back to Dr Pauly’s limited tour of Australia. You may remember Dr Pauly featured in the first major documentary about global overfishing The End of the Line. He has also written more than 500 scientific papers and authored several books. See him speak in Hobart, Launceston or Sydney on the global overfishing problem and what it means for Australia. Go to the facebook event pages for the Hobart,
or Sydney  (see below) talks that start this Friday.
Thank you for everything you have done to ban super trawlers from Australia and keep our fisheries moving in a more sustainable direction. We’ll continue to work to stop super trawlers in Australia, until they can prove that they are sustainable and don’t unnecessarily harm our unique marine life.
I hope you can take this once in a lifetime opportunity to see Dr. Pauly in Hobart, Launceston or Sydney – he’s absolutely incredible!
For the oceans,
Rebecca

Qld Chapter report to the AAEE Liaison Meeting 12/11/12

    AAEE Liaison Meeting 12/11/12
    Queensland Report
Jo Kelly (Queensland Co-convenor with Miranda Mason)

    Apologies:
For being unable to have a representative at the teleconference.   Queensland requests that National Liaison teleconferences be held on the weekend to avoid the conflicts of commitments that the many timezones of Australia inevitably cause on a seasonal basis.  To assist future organisation perhaps the meeting time for each state/territory be noted next to the event teleconference phone number and access code?
Queensland Happenings…for further details on all the below see our blog:
aaeeqld.blogspot.com.au  and don’t forget to join the site using the little blue tab to be kept abreast of all future happenings.

    Presentation:
Cam Mackenzie presented his experience at the Tbilisi as an AAEE rep. to our Chapter in September.  We are lucky enough to benefit from continuity in representation to Tbilisi with Peter Fensham, another chapter member, having attended the first conference!

    Advocacy:
AAEE is a member of the Australian Education for Sustainability Alliance (AESA) and has been contributing to the advocacy for EfS across the nation.  (You may have been a part of the campaign to save sustainability education in NSW – and the recent success in that state).
Queensland has been facing our own challenges to EfS, and your National and State representatives have been involved in advocating for EfS through AESA.   (You have been vocal with your thoughts, with 2 459 of you signing a petition put up by AESA to support climate science education in Queensland).

We recently attended a meeting with the Minister for the Queensland Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (Minister Powell) at Parliament House, Brisbane (Minister Langbroek has chosen not to meet with us at this time.)

AESA was represented by Jo Kelly, Co-convenor AAEE Queensland Chapter; Gemma Plesman, Australian Youth Climate Coalition Queensland;  Daniel Bevis, Acting Industrial Advocate Queensland Teachers Union.

In brief we asked the Minister:
    1)     to advocate for efs and Aussi
    2)    to host AuSSI within his department
    3)    To allocate funding ($10 million over 4 yrs) to QESSI
We received a written response from the Ministers office in October, and the funding request was denied.  However the two other key points were not addressed, and the Queensland Chapter is currently drafting a further response.  Anyone who wishes to be involved in future discussions are welcome to participate, contact Jo : jokelly48@gmail.com
