Education for sustainability in pre-service teacher education

This year sees the much-anticipated implementation of the new
Australian National Curriculum across all schools in Queensland, with
Education for Sustainability established as one of four
cross-curricular priorities. While schools and teachers negotiate the
implications of a cross-curriculum priority on their teaching
practice, teacher educators are also thinking about how to effectively
prepare future teachers for this new role. In an innovative research
project funded by Australian Learning and Teaching (ALT), a consortium
of Queensland universities is partnering with key stakeholders across
the Queensland teacher education system to develop a systematic
approach to embedding EfS within all teacher education institutions in
Queensland in ways that mirror EfS as a
cross-curriculum priority.

AAEE has been invited along with Education Queensland the Queensland
College of Teachers and Australian Teacher Education Association
(ATEA) as key stakeholders in the preparation of sustainably literate
teachers to participate in this project. The research will involve
collaboration at the national, state, institutional and course levels,
to develop curriculum practices in pre-service teacher education that
reflect a shared vision of EfS. If you would like further information,
or would like to contribute to the project, please contact the project
leader, Professor Bob Stevenson (James Cook University)
